Obi Heads To Court With Legal Team Over INEC’s Refusal To Allow LP Inspect Materials

The Labour Party (LP), presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has cancelled his scheduled governorship/state assembly campaign trips in order to attend court proceedings with his lawyers today.

Obi disclosed this via his official Twitter handle on Wednesday.

He, however, urged all the ObIdients in all the states to carry on with the campaigns ahead of Saturday’s polls.

He said, “I am supposed to commence our whistle-stop campaign for our various Labour Party Governorship and State Assembly Candidates today.

“Initially, my trip was to take me to Nasarawa, Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Plateau, Borno, etc.

“However, following INEC’s refusal to allow our party to inspect the materials (including BVAS) from the 25th February presidential elections, I am personally heading to the court today with our lawyers.

“As we pursue due process and defer to the rule of law, I urge all the OBIdients in the various states to continue campaigning for our candidates.”

The court is set to rule on the application file by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for permission to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for use in the  March 11 elections.

The electoral body said it needed that do so, to enable it to prepare the system for the upcoming election.

However, Obi’s legal team has moved a motion requesting the Appeal Court not to grant INEC the leave to reconfigure the BIVAS, expressing fear that the exercise might compromise evidence to be used in court in prosecuting the matter.
