Nigerian Stock Market Hands N183.70 billion To MRS, Others

Over N183.70 billion was gained on Tuesday, 17 January 2023, indicating the market capitalisation of the Nigerian stock exchange rose by 0.64 per cent.

The market capitalisation had closed Monday’s trading with N28.52 trillion, but it settled higher at N28.70 trillion at the end of trading hours today.

It followed the path of the All-Share Index, which rose to 52,701.31 ASI by  337.27 basis points when compared to the 52,364.04 ASI of the previous trading session. 

The capital market authority, Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), disclosed that investors traded 228.48 million shares in 3,681 deals, worth N4.44 billion. 

According to the NGX, the appetite was higher than Monday’s outing, when 198.70 million shares, valued at N2.94 billion, were exchanged in 5,072 deals.


  • Top five gainers

UPDC REIT share appreciated by N0.30kobo to rise from N3 to N3.30kobo per share 

MRS grew by N1.40kobo, up from N14.10kobo to N15.50kobo per share 

Chellarams ended trading with N1.33kobo from N1.21kobo per share, rising by N0.12kobo. 

Sunu Assurance gained 8.82 per cent to end trading at N0.37kobo, having opened with N0.34kobo per share. 

McNichols stock was up by 7.02 per cent, closing with N0.61kobo from N0.57kobo per share


  • Top five losers

UPDC depreciated by 6.93 per cent, dwindling from N1.01 to N0.94kobo per share. 

Geregu also fell by N10 to end trading at N139, after opening with N149 per share. 

Linkage Assurance followed the same path, losing 6.38 per cent after trading hours, to sell at N0.44kobo from N0.47kobo per share.   

Royal Exchange reported a decline of 5.26 per cent from the previous day’s share price of N0.95kobo to end trading at N0.90kobo per share.  

PZ share depreciated to N10 from N10.55kobo, after losing N0.55kobo during trading hours.


Top five trading equities in stock exchange

Sterling Bank reported 76.73 million shares valued at N118.90 million were traded on its floor   

Chams Holding recorded 17.56 million shares valued at N5.17 million  

GTCO saw investors trade 16.75 million of its shares valued at N401.98 million 

Zenith Bank recorded 11.32 million shares exchanged on its floor, worth N276.03 million  

Royal Exchange reported 10.65 million shares valued at N9.34 million exchanged in investors’ hands.
