MTN 5G Broadband Sells At N50,000

MTN Nigeria has begun sale of 5G broadband after becoming the first Nigerian telecommunications firm to roll out the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks on August 24, 2022.

The network provider had secured the 5G spectrum alongside Mafab Communications Limited after going through 10 bidding rounds in December 2021, with Airtel Nigeria dropping out of the bid.

Mafab Communications, however, failed to launch the 5G network on August 24, which was the deadline telecommunications industry regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), issued to the internet service providers.

Although the NCC gave Mafab Communications five-month extension for its 5G network rollout, with the firm having until January 2023 to launch its 5G service, while MTN Nigeria went on to rollout the 5G network on the deadline date.

Out of its 79.4 million telephony subscribers, which includes 63.7 million internet subscribers, MTN Nigeria had stated that only users residing in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maiduguri are enabled to use its 5G broadband during the test run period that started on August 24.

Aside from location being a factor in the 5G broadband service usage, Prime Business Africa understands that MTN Nigeria had also stated that only subscribers with certain enabled devices will be allowed to connect with and try out the new service where coverage is available.

The company is now selling its 5G Broadband Router to subscribers for N50,000 on a pre-order basis only. It is a high-speed broadband router also compatible with 4G and 3G.

The device is bundled with 100GB valid for 30 days, and connects up to 32 multiple devices.
