Moghalu Condemns Killing Of LP Candidate In Enugu

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Kingsley Moghalu has condemned the killing of Labour Party candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District in Enugu State on Wednesday night.

Chukwu, a lawyer, was reportedly shot and killed inside his branded Sienna bus on Wednesday night, by unknown gunmen at Amechi road, Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.

He was said to be returning from a campaign trip in Agbani.

The killing comes 48 hours to the Saturday 25th February elections.

Oyibo Chukwu would have contested against Chimaroke Nnamani of the PDP and Ada Ogbu of APC for the Enugu East Senatorial seat on Saturday’s general election.

Reacting to the incident, Moghalu, a former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took to his Twitter handle, to mourn Chukwu his former classmate at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

“What a tragedy! I’m deeply saddened. Oyibo was my classmate at the University of Nigeria (Enugu Campus) Law Faculty. Does politics have to be this desperate and violent? May his soul rest in peace. My sincere condolences to Oyibo Chukwu’s family.” Moghalu wrote.

Also, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has condemned the attack and called on security agencies to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are prosecuted.

“The Buhari administration must promptly investigate the reported killing of the Labour Party candidate for Enugu East Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu in Enugu while returning from a campaign trip. The perpetrators must be immediately arrested and prosecuted,” SERAP added.
