Iwobi Undergoes Scan On Ankle Injury, Player’s Father Hopeful

Nigeria international, Alex Iwobi, on Saturday underwent a scan to ascertain the extent of his ankle injury sustained in Friday’s 3rd round fixture between his team, Everton and Manchester United at the Old Trafford.

Iwobi, the nephew of former Nigeria international, Austin Jay Jay Okocha rolled his ankle under the challenge of United defender Tyrrell Malacia, in the 49th minute.

United went on to qualify for the 4th round of the competition.

A tearful Iwobi required a stretcher out of the pitch as he writhed in pains.

The player’s father, Chuka Iwobi, spoke exclusively to Prime Business Africa from his base in London on Saturday and was hopeful that the setback would not be as bad as first feared.

“We are hopeful that Alex’s injury isn’t so bad,” the father said.

“He (Alex) is having a scan today (Saturday) and we will then know the extent of his injury. I will let you know,” the former Enugu Rangers and Vasco of Enugu midfielder affectionately called “Mehalla” in his playing days further told Prime Business Africa.

“It’s an ankle ligament injury,” Everton manager, Frank Lampard said after the match.

“We are hoping it is a lesser one but I don’t know the extent of it. He left on crutches,” the former Chelsea star told the media.

Manchester United have only been eliminated from two of their previous 37 FA Cup third round ties, though both defeats in that run, against Leeds in 2009-10 and Swansea in 2013-14, came at Old Trafford.

United were quick off the blocks in the game and scored through Brazilian forward, Antony, who finished off Marcus Rashford’s cross.

Conor Coady equalised for the Toffes when he capitalised on a mistake from United’s keeper, David De Gea, who let the ball squirm through his legs.

In the 52nd minute, United got in front again through Rashford who drilled a shot that deflected off Coady.

The England international scored the last goal of the game from the penalty spot just before the full time whistle sounded.
