Speaking at the International Conference Centre in Ibadan, Makinde commended Chief Akande for his remarkable contributions to national development, noting his service to Oyo State, Osun State, and the nation in various capacities.

Praising Chief Akande as a political icon, Makinde underscored the importance of emulating leaders like him, who have left lasting legacies in different political roles.

He reiterated that political offices should be utilized for the benefit of the people, aligning with Chief Akande’s belief that power should be wielded to serve the populace.

Makinde urged a closer examination of Chief Akande’s thoughts, particularly a presentation he made in 1977 at the Constituent Assembly in Lagos. The governor pointed out that issues raised by Chief Akande, such as fiscal federalism, restructuring, and state police, remain relevant today and could enhance governance.

Makinde emphasized that devolving powers to states and local government areas, as seen in recent constitutional amendments, enables a more focused and effective approach to governance.

He cited the example of power generation, which has been devolved to states, urging citizens to hold their state governors accountable.

Furthermore, Makinde revealed past efforts to establish state police, acknowledging the formation of initiatives like Amotekun and Neighbourhood Watch. He urged a continued commitment to true federalism, emphasizing the importance of learning from history and implementing actions that align with Chief Akande’s insights.

The governor concluded by urging politicians to emulate leaders of impeccable character like Chief Akande, emphasizing that celebrating icons involves examining and implementing their thoughts for the benefit of the people.

The event, attended by dignitaries including Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima and President Bola Tinubu, celebrated Chief Bisi Akande’s life dedicated to service and leadership.
