Google Expands Search Option With Generative AI Enhancements

Google has unveiled innovative updates to its Search tool, harnessing the power of Generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI).

Elizabeth Reid, the Vice President of Search, revealed that the firm has been experimenting with the natural language understanding capabilities of generative AI, paving the way for a more intuitive search experience.

One of the major updates is “Circle to Search,” allowing users to seamlessly search anything on their Android phone screen without switching apps. Reid explained, “With a simple gesture, you can select images, text, or videos in whatever way comes naturally to you — like circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping — and find the information you need right where you are.”

The second update introduces an AI-powered multisearch experience, enabling users to pose complex questions using their camera or uploaded images. Reid emphasized, “The multisearch experience will show results with AI-powered insights that go beyond just visual matches, providing the ability to ask more nuanced questions about what you see.”

Google stressed that these updates result from extensive testing to ensure that gen AI enhances Search for everyone. Reid, in a previous interview, clarified that Google is cautious about integrating gen AI hastily, acknowledging that AI-generated text isn’t always the optimal solution, and load times remain a concern.

As Google pushes the boundaries of what AI can offer, Reid emphasized the importance of people’s lived experiences and adopters.
