Former Nigeria youth international Kelechi Nwakali has left his base tonight (Monday) enroute to Abuja to link up with his Super Eagles teammates ahead of the team’s departure to Cameroon on Wednesday for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nwakali who was captain of the conquering Golden Eaglets side that won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup where he captained the cadet team is due to touch down in Abuja Tuesday morning, Prime Business Africa understands.
Nwakali was originally not on the initial list of 40 players in the provisional squad but with the appointment of Austin Eguavoen as the interim coach of the team, Nigeria were granted special dispensation to add the former Arsenal youngster in the Nations Cup team.
Nwakali was in action for 90 minutes and was yellow carded in SD Huesca’s 0-1 defeat at home to Girona on Sunday evening in the Spanish Secunda Liga.
The Diamond Academy of Umuahia product is expected to bring creativity to the Eagles midfield that will miss a few players omitted from the squad including Oghenekaro Etebo – who plays in the same position as him due to injury.
