According to INEC National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr. Festus Okoye, the building was extensively damaged, with a number of office furniture destroyed despite the best effort of the Zamfara State Fire Service to contain the inferno.
The commission said the tragic incident which occurred around 11:00 pm, did not affect critical materials such as Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, stored in fireproof cabinets.
INEC said that the attention of the Nigeria Police has been drawn to the incident, adding that they have together with the Fire Service, “commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and advise the Commission for further action,” Okoye informed.
