Federal High Court Declares Jonathan Eligible To Contest 2023 Presidential Election

A Federal High Court sitting in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State on Friday, 27 May 2022, declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest for president in the 2023 general elections reports Prime Business Africa.

The judgment was delivered by Justice Hamma Adama Dashen who declared that the former President is not affected by the fourth alteration to the constitution barring Vice-Presidents who succeed their principals from serving more than full term.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2018 signed the fourth alteration of the 1999 Constitution which bars Vice-Presidents who succeed their principals from serving more than one full term.

Jonathan was Nigeria’s vice-president between 2007 and 2010. He became the president in May 2010 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and completed the latter’s tenure.

The development is coming 72 hours to APC presidential primaries, precisely slated to hold between May 29 to May 30, 2022.

Jonathan rejected Presidential form paid on his behalf few weeks ago by a Coalition group.
