Ezeife To Lead Ohanaeze Ndigbo Delegation To Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

A former governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, will lead a delegation of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to the trial of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The court is expected to sit for Kanu’s trial on Monday, July 26, 2021, in Abuja and the apex Igbo socio-cultural group will be represented.

Ezeife was appointed to lead the delegation by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide , H.E. Prof George Obiozor.

Others in the delegation are National Legal Adviser , Bar Joseph Ojobu, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, and another as lawyers representing Ohanaeze on a watching brief.

The IPOB leader, a dual citizen of both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, had fled Nigeria in September 2017 after soldiers invaded his home in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State capital, during an anti-Biafra military operation in the South-east region.

Before fleeing the country, Kanu was standing trial for treasonable felony arising from his activities as IPOB leader; and he had been granted bail by the court.

Four years later on June 29, 2021, the country was take by surprise with the announcement of Kanu’s re-arrest in a short statement by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of justice, Abubakar Malami.

Malami at a press conference said that “recent steps taken by the Federal Government saw to the interception of the fugitive Kanu on Sunday, June 27, 2021.”

He added that Kanu “has been arrested through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services.”

Following his arrest, Kanu was taken to Federal High Court, Abuja, which ordered that the IPOB leader be remanded in Department of State Service (DSS) facility.

Justice Nyako adjourned the matter until July 26 for trial continuation.
