Enugu East Senatorial Seat: Kelvin Chukwu Replaces Assassinated Elder Brother As LP Candidate

The Labour Party has replaced the assassinated senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district, Barr Oyibo Chukwu, with his younger brother, Mr Kelvin Chukwu for the election that will take place on March 11.

Prime Business Africa had reported that Oyibo Chukwu was assassinated less than 72 hours to the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday, 25th of February, 2023.

Chukwu was reportedly returning from a political campaign rally when he was shot and burnt inside his Sienna bus alongside his assistant and a few others.

Consequently, the election was shifted to 11th March 2023 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in fulfilment of the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 to enable the Labour Party to get a replacement.

The Labour Party governorship candidate in the state, Hon Chijioke Edeoga, had while condemning the brutal assassination of Chukwu, maintained that the party was in search of a credible person for replacement, who would be accepted by the party stakeholders and family of the deceased candidate.

“We are taking steps – we are consulting important stakeholders to make sure that the person who emerges will meet the various expectations both of the zone, the Oyibo family, and the Labour Party leadership both in Abuja and in Enugu State. We are looking for somebody or person who will match in this expectations and feel the place and hopefully the person will win given the trend in Enugu State at this point,” Edoga said.

However, the posters of Chukwu’s younger brother, Kelvin flooded Enugu on Friday. One of the posters spotted had pictures of the Labour Party governorship candidate, Chijioke Edeoga and that of the late Oyibo Chukwu and his junior brother Kelvin which expressed that.

“Kelvin replaces his late elder brother for Enugu East Senatorial Zone Elections come 11th March 2023” on the platform of the Labour Party.
