England’s women football national team created history by winning their first major women’s tournament against arch-rivals and eight-time champions Germany with a 2-1 win at a sell-out Wembley Sunday evening.
Substitute Chloe Kelly scored the winner in extra-time at the packed stadium that harbored over 87,000 fans after Germany’s Lina Magull had set up a nervous ending by restoring parity, cancelling Ella Toone’s opener in normal time.
The victory is England’s first-ever European Championship triumph and the country’s first major trophy in the sport since the 1966 World Cup.
Mead was named Player of the Tournament and the Golden Boot winner after England lifted the trophy, while Williamson captained the team to glory, enjoying a brilliant tournament in the process.
