The second richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has announced plan to quit his Chief Executive Officer (CEO) role at Twitter, two months after acquiring the company.
Musk had taken over the Chief executive role after sacking Parag Agrawal, who was appointed last year to replace Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, when the firm was still a publicly owned entity.
He sacked Agrawal and the board members after acquiring the company for $44 billion to effect his takeover. Musk has been serving as CEO, but his tenure has come under scrutiny from advertisers and people opposed to his acquisition.
On Monday, he held a poll on Twitter to weigh the opinion of users on the social media platform, asking “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.”
Over 17.5 million Twitter users voted, with 57.5 per cent voting in favour of him resigning, while 42.5 per cent supported said he should stay on as the chief executive.
On Wednesday, Musk wrote that he would be stepping down from the CEO role in response to the votes. Although he stated that he will resign only after a replacement has been appointed.
“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams,” the billionaire said on Wednesday morning.
Musk has used his Twitter poll to make some decisions, such as reinstating the accounts of United States rapper, Kanye West, former United States President Donald Trump, and others banned by former Twitter management.
Recall that following his takeover, Tesla shareholders have been concerned about his focus on the electric carmaker, with claims that he spends too much time on the affairs of Twitter.
Musk had also promised Tesla investors that he will resign from his chief executive role at Twitter once he finds a replacement.
