Electricity Workers To Join NLC Nationwide Protest, May Result To National Blackout

National wide blackout looms following the decision of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), to join other unions in solidarity protest for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

The electricity workers are joining the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which announced a solidarity protest involving other unions across various sectors over government’s refusal to met the demands of ASUU.

Last week, NLC had announced a nationwide industrial protest slated for July 26 and 27, 2022, which will see employees in the banking, insurance, and other financial markets join in solidarity.

President Muhammadu Buhari had initially given the Minister of Education, Adamu, 14 days to resolve the strike issue with ASUU, however, the presidency issued a statement denying the claim.

This has further heightened tension between the academic Unions and the government, with ASUU accusing the labour minister, Chris Ngige, for the prolong strike, and declaring that the union will not call it off.

In a statement disclosing its intention to join the strike that would begin on Tuesday, the general secretary of NUEE, Joe Ajaero, said the group had made the decision during its Central Working Committee and National Executive Council meeting of Congress.

“All members of the union are enjoined to massively mobilise and actively participate in the NLC/ASUU solidarity protest against the continued closure of the nation’s tertiary institutions, scheduled for July 26/27, 2022.

“You are encouraged to work with the leadership of State Executive Councils of the congress in your various states with a view of having a successful outing. Aluta Continua!” The group said.
