Electricity Grid Records Fifth Collapse In Four Months, 99 Times Under President Buhari

For the fifth time in the last four months, Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Sunday, disclosing the Federal Government’s inability to halt the situation, considering it has collapse more times than all of 2021.

The recent collapse was reported by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc and Kaduna Electricity Distribution, as the electricity system succumbs to vandalism on gas pipeline, gas supply challenges, and water shortage.

This is the fifth collapse since the last two in April. The national grid had also resulted into black out twice in March. Last year, the power plant had broke down four times within 12 months, taking the total number of collapse to 99 during President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

Although, between 2010 to 2020, the national grid collapsed 216 times. The inability of the government to put an end to the failure of the grid has increased the petrol consumption of Nigerians, who spent about N156.5 billion in the last two weeks of May.

Commenting on the recent collapsed, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company said it affected five states under its operation, “The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a system collapse which occurred at 6.49pm this evening, Sunday, June 12, 2022.

“As a result of this development, all our outgoing feeders are out and this has affected supply to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.” the firm said, adding, “We are on standby, awaiting further information on restoration of supply from the National Control Centre. Thank you.”

Also disclosing the blackout, Kaduna Disco stated, “Dear esteemed customers, we regret to inform you that the power outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to system collapse of the national grid.

“The collapse occured at about 18:47pm this evening hence the loss of supply on all our outgoing feeders. Power supply shall be restored as soon as the national grid is powered back. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.”
