Eguavoen Hails Appointment Of 1994 AFCON Winning Teammate Amuneke As Eagles Chief Coach

 

Newly appointed Super Eagles chief coach Emmanuel Amuneke will bring huge quality and value to the national team according to the Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Director and interim head coach of the team Austin Eguavoen.

Amuneke led the Golden Eaglets to lift the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile seven years ago with Nigeria the most successful team at the cadelt level.

The 1994 Africa Footballer of The Year winner was also in charge of the Tanzanian national team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The former Zamalek, Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon forward is a member of the CAF and FIFA Technical Study Group.

“Amuneke is my younger brother and we have worked together for so long. I think his coming into the team will add a lot of value also.

“Amuneke’s appointment is a very good development,” Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles to a round of 16 at the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon told the NFF TV.

Amuneke’s appointment came at the expense of former Flying Eagles coach Paul Aigbogun albeit Salisu Yusuf (third assistant coach) and Joseph Yobo (fourth assistant coach) are still part of the team. Aloy Agu retains his position as the Goalkeepers’ coach.

Meanwhile Amuneke ain an interview with Brila FM Lagos thanked Nigerians for the confidence they have in him.

“I’m always willing to serve my country adm I want to thank Nigerians for believing in me. The Nations Cup is gone now and the focus on qualification to the World Cup,” Amuneke emphasised.

The list of players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs next month against Ghana is expected to be released in the second week second week of March.

He has been part of cast in some Nollywood movies and radio dramas including Blood Money 2, Scores To Settle, Dead End 2, Another Campus Tale and Battle Line. Aside mainstream media and the entertainment industry, he has interests in scouting/unearthing of talents in the sports and creative sectors, exports business and property development.
