EFCC set to file 800 new corruption cases in court – Bawa

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that the commission is prepared to file 800 new cases in court. He said the cases will mostly be bordering on public corruption and cybercrime.

Abdulrasheed Bawa disclosed that this ought to have been filed but for the delay occasioned by the long strike action embarked upon by Judiciary workers that resulted in the shutting down of the courts for over two months.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday while attending the weekly briefing of the heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s), Bawa informed journalists of the strides being made by the EFCC.

He said the commission had on Wednesday proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the former managing director of Bank PHB, Francis Atuche who has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for defrauding the bank of the sum of N25.7bn.

Bawa also promised to prosecute anew former Abia state governor Orji Kalu. The court had earlier set Mr Kalu free on technicalities after he was accused to have allegedly stolen billions from the state while he was governor.
