Defection Rumour: Jonathan Still Our Member – PDP Spokesman

In the midst of growing speculation about the defection of former president Goodluck Jonathan to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba has said he is still a member of the party, insisting that he has not officially resigned from the PDP.

Ologunagba said the party is not relying on rumours about Jonathan’s purported defection to APC, declaring that he is not aware of the former president’s resignation from the PDP.

The PDP national publicity secretary stated this while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily show on Friday morning monitored by Prime Business Africa.

While describing the former president as a well respected democrat all over the world, Ologunagba said, “We want to leave it at rumour level, and wouldn’t comment on the rumour as to whether he has left or not. We would comment on the actual facts as they come and not when it is being speculated.”

“Membership of the party is personal. Membership of the party is at the ward level. As I speak here, I don’t have specific details of who and who is a member of the party.”

He said the question about whether Jonathan is still a member of the PDP should be directed to the former president to answer directly whether he is still a member of the PDP or not.

“I can’t and don’t speak for the former President. I speak for PDP and I can’t comment on Whether he is a member or not. If you want I can refer you to his ward. The ward chairman and secretary would be the right people to confirm whether indeed he has left the party,” the PDP chieftain stressed, maintaining that if he is leaving the party he needs to do that from his ward.

“As far as today, I am not aware of his resignation from the membership of the party. I would assume it is safe to say that he is a member of the party. I speak to facts, not rumours. If events follow thereafter, then we can deal with that,” the PDP spokesman maintained.

In the past few weeks, there have been rumours, speculations and reports about the former president being tipped to join the APC and take the presidential ticket for the 2023 election. A group had reportedly purchased the N100 million nomination form for Jonathan, which he, later on, denounced through a statement from his media aide, saying they were acting on their own.

Also, a report indicated that the group behind the purchase of the APC presidential nomination form for Jonathan will submit the form on his behalf on Friday (today) and is pressing on with moves to ensure that the former president emerges as the consensus candidate of the APC.
