CVR Hits 11m As INEC Ends Voter Registration In 4 Days Time

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recorded over 11 million fresh registrations within the last one week just as it prepares to end the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in four days time.

This was revealed in a weekly CVR update released by INEC as at Monday July 25, for Quarter 4, Week 15, which showed a surge in number of fresh voter registrations.

A breakdown of the INEC data on completed registerations of 11,011,119 shows the number of fresh registrants as 10,487,972; online pre-registration, 3,391,940; while physical registrantion was out at 7,619,179.

The total number of completed registration is significantly the highest number since January 2022.

Further breakdown of the data shows that the number of Male registrants as 5,453,071, and Female registrants, 5,558,048 – slightly above that of male voters. Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) recorded 80,101 registrants.

Further more, the number of youth registrants is also on the increase, as the week under review recorded 7,828,570. This is roughly an increase of 5,877,947 from January 2022 of 1,950,623 registrants.

PWDs voter registration has also been on steady increase from January 2022 when it recorded 25,523.

Looking at the record of registration by states, an infographics released by INEC shows that of the newly registered voters released on Monday, Lagos State had the highezt number of registered voters, overtaking Kano.That was Lagos topping the list for the first time since January this year.

Kano as of last week recorded 458,559 fresh registrants, with Lagos coming second with 451,156.

In a map-like infographics released by INEC on Tuesday, Lagos was in the lead with 508,936, while Kano recorded 500,207 and Delta with 481,929 newly registered voters. Other leading states had thus: Rivers – 436459, Kaduna – 417,427, and Bayelsa – 416,519 number of completed registerations.

Delta, slightly ranked top in the number of online registrants with 641,765, followed by Lagos accrued 640, 560, Kaduna 574, 804, Bayelsa with 550,208 and Borno 501,220 online registrants.

Interestingly, a rough tabulation of online registrants since January 2022 shows 15,912,423 while number of physically registered voters put at 25,312,007.

Notably also since the January 2022 CVR exercise Delta State has continued to top the list until now, against states like Lagos, Kano, Bayelsa and River State.

The voter registration exercise in July has witnessed the higher number of student registrants. Roughly since January 2022, INEC has recorded an increase of over 3 million from January to July 2022, thus: January – 989, 166, February – 1,251,617, March – 1,610,886, April – 1,853,553, May – 2,216,737, June – 3,409,544 and July -4,003,348.

INEC revealed that a total of 28,453,255 voters have registered since the exercise began in June 2021.

The electoral body has announced its intention to end voter registration exercise on July 31, 2022 to enable it update voters records, and print Permanent Voter Cards for fresh and registrants and those who applied for replacement ahead of the 2023 general election.
