COREN Laments Increased Cases Of Building Collapse

THE Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has listed improper designs, poor quality of materials and inadequate site practices as the causes of building collapse across the country.

The President of COREN, Ali Rabiu, lamented the rise in building collapse at the 2021 Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abuja Branch.

He noted that research by the council had shown the major causes of building collapse.

Rabiu stated that COREN would discipline practitioners who failed to follow building construction guidelines.

The council president said, “During the past few years, COREN has observed the increasing rate of collapse of building structures across the country, with the attendant loss of lives and property.

“Investigations carried out on some of these incidents showed that improper designs, poor quality materials and improper site practices have been the major causes. Where professional engineers were found to have been involved, the COREN tribunal has enforced necessary disciplinary measures.”

According to him, a strict law is needed to deal with cases of negligence on the part of developers and quacks who fail to use professionals in the execution of projects.
