Commonwealth Games: Buhari Thumbs Up Team Nigeria, Urges Sports Ministry, Stakeholders To Build On Performance

President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and other relevant stakeholders to build on the successful performance of Team Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham reports Prime Business Africa.
Nigeria finished in 7th place on the medals table with 12 Gold, 9 Silver and 14 Bronze medals and were the best African nation at the 22nd edition of the Games.
While congratulating the contingent the President notes it is heartwarming that there was peaceful atmosphere in the camp throughout the Games which inadvertently reflected positively on the team’s performances.
In a release signed by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina, Buhari urged that preparations should begin early and earnest to surpass this spectacular achievement in upcoming competitions.
The President according to the release, looks forward to a rousing reception from Nigerians for members of Team Nigeria, even as he assures all stakeholders that youth and sports development will remain a priority for this administration.
The closing ceremony of the Games in Birmingham was held on Monday night with the torch passed to Victoria, Australia who will host the competition in March 2026.
Izuchukwu Okosi

Izuchukwu Okosi is a Nigerian sports and entertainment journalist with two decades of experience in the media industry having begun his media journey in 2002 as an intern at Mundial Sports International (MSI) and Africa Independent Television (AIT), owners of Daar Communications Plc. In October 2004, Okosi joined Complete Communications Limited, publishers of Complete Sports newspaper and Complete Football magazine as a reporter and later script writer for the Complete Sports studio. He worked there for 13 years until October 2017. Okosi is a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Association of Voiceover Artistes of Nigeria (AVOA), Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). He has been part of cast in some Nollywood movies and radio dramas including Blood Money 2, Scores To Settle, Dead End 2, Another Campus Tale and Battle Line. Aside mainstream media and the entertainment industry, he has interests in scouting/unearthing of talents in the sports and creative sectors, exports business and property development.
