China Suspends Cooperation With US, Sanctions Pelosi Over Taiwan Visit

The Chinese government has expressed displeasure at the controversial  visit of the United States’ House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan despite warnings from China.

In a statement released by Chinese Foreign Ministry, the government said “U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted on visiting Taiwan in disregard of China’s serious concerns and firm opposition, seriously interfering in China’s internal affairs, seriously undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously trampling on the one-China principle, and seriously threatening the peace and stability across Taiwan Strait.”

The Foreign Ministry disclosed that, in response to the action, the Chinese government has decided to impose sanctions on Pelosi.

“In response to Pelosi’s vicious and provocative actions, China has decided to impose sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family,” the statement indicated.

In retaliation to the government of the United States provocative actions, China’s foreign ministry also announced that it would  suspend cooperations with US on some issues and also take serious measures against the country.

The actions include:
Suspension of cooperation on the repatriation of illegal immigrants, legal assistance on criminal matters and the combat of transnational crimes.

The suspension also include anti-drug cooperation and climate change talks, a major area of cooperation between both countries.

China also said it would cancel future phone calls and meetings between Chinese and US defence leaders and the cancellation of annual naval meetings under the China-US military maritime consultation mechanism.

China which has always regard the Island of Taiwan as part of mainland China,’ had warned earlier that if Nancy Pelosi enters Taiwan, it will take forceful measure and as the US speaker left, military exercises have been carried out by the Chinese military.

China’s official news agency Xinhua, reported that the military “flew more than 100 warplanes including fighters and bombers” during the exercises, as well as “over 10 destroyers and frigates.”
