AWCON 2022 Qualifiers: Nigeria’s Super Falcons Begins Abuja Camping Ahead Of February Clashes Against CIV

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons will this evening (Monday, November 22, 2021) begin camping in Abuja ahead of their final round of the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup Nations, AWCON qualifier against Lady Elephants of Ivory Coast.

The Falcons edged out  archrivals Ghana 3-2 on aggregate to reach the latter end of the qualification stages.

The 9-day camping will round off next week Tuesday, 30th November and is geared towards improving the bond within the team.

A total of 30 players – 15 home based and 15 foreign based players – will be in the camp.

Leading the home girls are forwards Gift Monday and Vivian Ikechukwu, who scored two goals each during the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament in Lagos in September, and there are also goalkeeper Onyinyechukwu Okeke, defender Akudo Ogbonna, midfielder Goodness Onyebuchi and forward Mary-Ann Ezenagu.

Striker, Desire Oparanozie who has had a running battle with the Nigeria Football Federation leads the overseas-based stars alongside midfieder Rasheedat Ajibade, defenders Patricia George, Leicester City’s Ashley Plumptre and defender Onome Ebi.

The home camping comes few months after a similar camping programme in the Austrian capital, Vienna and towards the end of what has been a busy year for the Falcons, in which they also participated in the Turkish Women’s Cup Tournament, the USWNT Summer Series in the United States of America and the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament in Lagos.

The team has reached the final round of the 12th Women AFCON qualifiers after a 2-1 aggregate defeat of arch rivals Ghana, and will confront another strong West African side, Cote d’Ivoire for a place in Morocco.

The final round of qualifiers will hold in February next year, with the first leg taking place in Lagos.

Izuchukwu Okosi

Izuchukwu Okosi is a Nigerian sports and entertainment journalist with two decades of experience in the media industry having begun his media journey in 2002 as an intern at Mundial Sports International (MSI) and Africa Independent Television (AIT), owners of Daar Communications Plc. In October 2004, Okosi joined Complete Communications Limited, publishers of Complete Sports newspaper and Complete Football magazine as a reporter and later script writer for the Complete Sports studio. He worked there for 13 years until October 2017. Okosi also worked various times as Correspondent, Content creator and Editor at Sports Market International Magazine, Opera News, All Nigeria Soccer Media and Iconic Media Watch. He also undertook freelance writing gigs for some local and international organizations. Okosi is a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Association of Voiceover Artistes of Nigeria (AVOA), Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). He has been part of cast in some Nollywood movies and radio dramas including Blood Money 2, Scores To Settle, Dead End 2, Another Campus Tale and Battle Line. Aside mainstream media and the entertainment industry, he has interests in scouting/unearthing of talents in the sports and creative sectors, exports business and property development.
