ASUU Vs Nigerian Govt Suit: Court Rules On Wednesday

The National Industrial Court, Abuja on Monday fixed Wednesday, September 21 for ruling on the suit filed by the Nigerian government against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the lingering strike embarked on by the union.

Prime Business Africa had reported that the Nigerian government through the Minister of Labour and Employment Dr Chris Ngige had filed a suit in the National Industrial Court challenging the ongoing strike by university lecturers.

The court had at the previous sitting last Friday, adjourned the suit until Monday (September 19) to hear the application for an interlocutory injunction filed by the government.

At the resumed hearing on Monday, the lead counsel for the Nigerian Government, James Igwe, argued his application seeking an order of the court to restrain ASUU from continuing with the ongoing nationwide industrial action.

Igwe who had asked the court to give the suit an accelerated hearing due to the urgency of the matter, argued that it would be proper for the strike to be called off pending the determination of the suit, to enable students to return to school.

Justice Peter Hamman fixed the Wednesday date for ruling after listening to the argument by Igwe.
