The Police in Anambra State has arrested suspected cultists who killed two policemen in the state capital, Awka in December 2021 and were also responsible for the February 26 killings of mourners at a funeral in the state.
The command disclosed that it also recovered riffles carted away from the slain policemen during the mindless incident by the cultists.
A press release on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said the cultists launched an attack on UNIZIK Vigilante operatives.
The hoodlums who attacked the vigilante operatives had been overpowered and arrested, while their leader was burnt alive by a mob.
A source said the vigilante operatives later handed over the arrested suspects to the police.
Ikenga in his press release said: “Recall that on 14th December 2021, cultists attacked the Chairman of Tricycle Owners Association in broad daylight near Unizik junction.
Two Police officers who were in the area were killed and their weapons, two AK 47 rifles, carted away.
“On 26th February 2022, the same cult group attacked a funeral ceremony at Ebenebe in Awka North LGA killing several mourners.
“On Tuesday 15th March 2022 police succeeded in recovering a cache of weapons which included the two AK-47 rifles earlier stolen from the two Policemen murdered on 14th December 2021.”
The Anambra Police Command further said it also recovered other weapons, including three pump action guns, three locally made beretta pistols, one locally made chief recover pistol, nine Ak-47 magazines, two battle axes, assorted ammunition for the firearms above and a Mercedes Benz V-Booth, with registration number: Lagos HC 661 AAA.
