Aguero Announces Retirement From Football After Heart Scare

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero in an emotional press conference on Wednesday confirmed his retirement from football at the Nou Camp.

The 33-year-old who also played previously in the Spanish La Liga for Atletico Madrid had his best club football at Manchester City where he scored 260 goals in 390 matches.

The Argentine won five Premier League titles, the Carabao Cup on six occasions and a solitary FA Cup winner’s medal in 2019. He also picked up the English golden boot with 26 goals during the 2014/2015 season.

Aguero has been forced to hang up his boots prematurely after suffering a heart scare during one of five outings during a short spell at the Nou Camp.

Best remembered for the iconic goal against QPR which helped City get their hands on a first Premier League title in 2012 – under the most dramatic circumstances – there was no real surprise when the Argentine identified it as one of the most memorable parts of his successful playing career.

“My health comes first. Medical staff have told me it’s best to stop playing and so I’m now leaving Barça and retiring from football,” Aguero stated ruefully.

“I will leave now with my head held high, I’m happy. I don’t know what awaits me in the next life. I know there’s a lot of people that love me, and want the best for me”.

‘Kun’ Aguero who was a son in-law of Diego Maradona played 786 matches, scored 426 goals and notched up 118 assists in his playing career.
