42-year-old Ikeja Electric Technician, Matthew Umukoro, Dies On Duty

Ikeja Electric technician, Matthew Umukoro, has died while on duty for the electricity company in Igbe Road, Igbogbo, an area located in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos state.

Umukoro, who began working for Ikeja Electric on March 1, 2016, fell while working on an electricity pole, which broke in the process, causing him to lose consciousness. The incident occurred in the afternoon on June 13, 2022.

The technician was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. Umukoro died at the age of 42-year-old, and six years into the job. His body was deposited in the General Hospital mortuary, Ikorodu.

Confirming the fatal accident, Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said Umukoro’s colleague reported the incident to the police.

“The incident happened on Monday, June 13, 2022. Matthew Umukoro’s colleague visited the station and reported that he was working on an electric pole around 3pm, but in the process, the pole got broken and he fell.

“He was immediately rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.” Hundeyin said.

The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue, said the incident will be investigated to determine what went wrong, according to Punch report.

“One of our staff, a field technician, suffered a fatal accident while working on an electric pole. He was rushed to a hospital, but unfortunately, he passed on.” Ofulue said.

He added that, “It is a tragic situation and we deeply commiserate with his family and friends. Already, we have commenced an investigation and safety assessment of the situation to determine what went wrong.

“Safety is a critical aspect of the company’s culture and it is paramount that every technician is fully kitted in personal protective equipment whenever they are on the field. The company will spare no cost to ensure that staff members are protected in their line of duty due to the sensitive nature of the task.”
